Never heard of it? It's okay, you aren't the only one. I was introduced to Universal Design for learning through my SHSU assignments and research. Universal Design for Learning is an educational framework providing guidance for educators in designing lesson goals, materials, methods, and assessments to improve learning in the classroom as well as meet the diverse needs of all students.

Goals of Universal Design for Learning include:

Here is a great informational video to help you gain more understanding of Universal Design for Learning:

This concept of teaching reminds me of the SAMR Model & utilizing the 4Cs. As part of a cohort of teachers in the Visionary program, our school district has us try to adhere to the SAMR Model and the 4Cs when creating learning experiences for students. I feel that I have touched on some of the same concepts and practices as I would in Universal Design for Learning through those models.

What am I already using/doing?

I work hard in the library to Recruit Interest and provide opportunities for learning with ALL my students. I look to offer choices in activities that students would like to complete and make sure the lessons have value in their learning. I have also worked hard to declutter the library so that students can focus and feel comfortable in their library space.
I feel as though Perception lies under the umbrella of equitable accessibility and that is my goal every day. Lastly, Physical Action is probably where I excel. I look for multiple venues for students to access information, share information, and assess themselves. Using Google Suite to work independently or collaborate, Seesaw, Screencastify, and Nearpod are all implemented to give students the option to respond to their learning. I also work to find resources the will assist in learning as ofter as I can and implement them immediately if I am able.

What could I add right now?

I feel like I have touched on some aspects within the Build area when fostering collaboration and community I look to use resources like Quizlet Live to get students to work together or build teams in Kahoot during a game activity assessment. I also like the use of Google Suite to have students work collaboratively on research. I do think I could try harder to promote understanding across languages to build on collaboration within learning communities. I also think with school closures I could help teachers with media to use for communication. I just recently took the online courses for Screencastify and found they were very helpful in communication for teachers and students.

What looks appealing but could use some help with?

Self Regulation may be difficult to implement in the library classroom but could be done when need would arise, but I could partner with the Counselor to devise lessons that could use techniques for teaching coping skills and strategies.
When looking at Comprehension I could give teachers the opportunity to offer background reminders or connections more often during lessons. This could even help me build a better collaborative working relationship with teachers.
Lastly, implementing more from Executive Functions could be a step in the right direction when teaching students to monitor their progress in programs provided by the library. I would definitely need teachers on board to allow students time to mark their progress. Students could monitor goals in coding as well as Ren Learn (AR) to start and then monitor classroom subject goals.

Ideas and Info to explore

The Learning Guidelines for Universal Design for Learning is going to be a frequent stop for information and resources that will help guide me in implementation. Still, it does not show you the access to all the hyperlinked information within the image on the original page, so definitely check out the guidelines link or click the guideline image below..

  1. I always enjoy reading your words and think you have a great talent for writing. Great idea about pairing with the counselor to provide lessons for coping skills for students. And I like that you added technology platforms that would benefit each aspect of UDL.
