YouTube, Animoto and QR Codes

YouTube is a great tool for education allowing users to create tutorial videos, share what they know or have learned on a subject and even make videos for fun. A Librarian can create videos to introduce new materials in the library, tutorials on how to access online databases and how to traverse the library as well as videos to promote the library.

YouTube gives you the ability to create an account so that you can have your own channel with videos you create, as well as save other channels by subscribing for easy access and updates for new videos. The following are some YouTube channels you should check out as well as some videos I found most helpful to students and some that students would like best.

Some schools have filters that may block YouTube videos. One way to view videos without worrying about added unwanted ads or content would be to load it and push it out through a site like View Pure. View Pure is a site that will take your videos to remove distracting comments and the sidebar videos some of which could be inappropriate for student view.

Animoto

Animoto is a video creation service that takes pictures, text, music, and video to put into a web-based presentation. This is a great tool for classrooms and libraries. Students can share their thoughts on any book as well as create presentations to share information or things learned. Check out a book trailer I created on Animoto.

QR Codes

QR Codes can be a great way to share web-based information or creations. You can create a QR code for almost anything on the web. Using QR coder generators makes it really easy. Here is a QR to the book trailer I created above.

You can even add QR generators and readers to your Chrome page. If you don’t want to search for a QR reader in an app store that’s okay iPhones have updated to have a QR reader in the camera app. Just turn on the camera, scan over the QR code and viola the link pops up to your QR destination.

  1. I love YouTube! I can't sit and watch for hours like my teenagers but it has been so helpful for me when I can't figure something out. I upload all of my screencasts to a YouTube channel for our campus and when the AP sends out her weekly Smore newsletter to the teachers she includes a button that takes them directly to the channel. It's a little bit of work up front but once the video is created and uploaded, it's available to teachers at their convenience.

  2. I love that you chose to embed the videos in your blog (this was super helpful to me). I really loved being able to work on this assignment also because it really showed me what the power of a social page (like YouTube) is able to do for the school and the community. You did a fantastic job!

  3. That was such a cute trailer. I notice that you didn't have the Animoto logo in the corner--was there a way to get rid of that without upgrading, or are you using a paid subscription? Just curious because I thought that was a major con to using the program.

    1. I searched for free and used what popped up. It was pretty perfect that the theme had animals and went with the book I did. I didn't have to change anything so that may have been why I didn't have the watermark. I also signed up with Animoto in 2011 when more stuff may have been available.
