Feed Readers

Feed Readers

I have to admit I had never heard of a feed reader before and feel a bit out of the loop. I was pleasantly surprised at my first foray into the feed reader world. It would then make sense that I am not a big blog reader. I usually have little to no time for reading outside of assignments and school readings (to keep up with my students) but off I went in search of insights from others in my field.

I tried out Feedly first to see how I would like searching up blogs to follow. Feedly had a nice setup with a sidebar to show the blogs you chose to follow and even organize them under headings you create. The problem I found was the search for the blogs. Unless you search for the specific blog you may not get a good return on the search. I found myself turning to Google and then going back to Feedly to add blogs I found interesting.

Then I tried Bloglovin and I am kind of loving it. I figured out that I could connect it with my own blog. I was then able to do simple searches for terms like elementary library, library tech, and elementary book reviews. These searches were more fruitful than Feedly with more options to choose from with more familiar faces that I have seen or heard of in the library realm. I also really liked the images/thumbnails attached to the blog offerings. Having the thumbnails for posts, the ability to create collections much like Pinterest and keep it simple made Bloglovin my top pick for a feed reader.

Blogs I chose to follow:

Kathy Schrock’s Kaffeeklatsch
http://blog.kathyschrock.net - I found out about Kathy Schrock in a previous LSSL course and I found her insights and offerings in the tech library world pretty awesome. She gives her honest opinion on gadgets I could use in the library with my students and also has a guide to all possible apps to apply during lessons with Ipads. Our school district is pushing the use of technology so being up to date on the newest tech and its uses will be a great benefit.

Mrs. ReaderPants
https://www.readerpants.net/ - An American librarian stationed in China shares her library lesson ideas, management tips, and some book reviews. She even has a section within her blog titled “Newbies” which I will be referring to for a while. As a new librarian, I feel like I don’t have as many colleagues that relate to what I need as I did as a teacher in a classroom and Mrs. ReaderPants covered some of the most recent ideas I wanted to address in my library.

Dallas Center-Grimes Elementary Library blog
https://dcgelementarylibrary.blogspot.com - This blog is a showcase of ideas used in an elementary library. I am super excited to follow this library. They offer technology ideas and all the things I want to offer from my website one day. Ideas for new maker space materials, lessons, and library set up were just a few things that I located. This site makes me happy and excited about my journey as a librarian.

We Need Diverse Books
https://diversebooks.org/blog/ - This blog works to promote the production of literature that showcases all children. Being in a school with a diverse enrollment of students I strive to locate literature that will connect with my readers “We Need Diverse Books” gives me insight into books that will help me reach more of my readers.
